TicketSizzle 2011 Major League Baseball Roundup
Major League Baseball 2011
We may never know if baseball is more American than apple pie, but we do know one thing for sure; 2011 is going to be one interesting season for Major League Baseball.
Now that the word is out, you can start planning ahead for some of the great lineups this season. Like the Subway Series battles between the Yankees and Mets. Nothing like pitting New Yorkers against each other to get everyone’s blood flowing. That, and any discussions of Mayor Bloomberg. So the Yanks failed to nab Cliff Lee, but they still have Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.
Can defending champs San Francisco Giants keep their momentum going? Their pitching is what helped them win the World Series last year. But the loss of Juan Uribe hurt. However they did become the first NL team, since the Braves in 1997, to have four pitchers who made 33 starts. Not too shabby, but only time will tell if the Giants can pull it together.
The Boston Red Sox are starting off the season at home, eventually taking on the Cubs for three games at Fenway Park for the first time in almost 100 years. But that’s not the juicy part. Just as they did in 2010, the Red Sox are opening with a bang, duking it out with East Coast rivals the New York Yankees.
Philadelphia Phillies fans might have been voted the worst fans ever by GQ, but that doesn’t mean they’re not loyal. At least according to Facebook, which labeled Phillies fans as some of the most dedicated in baseball. With the Phillies winning their fourth straight NL East title last year, it would be easy to get complacent. But fans know they’re in it to win it, and with fave Cliff Lee pitching, the Phillies are looking pretty strong this year.
Speaking of Lee, the Texas Rangers may have lost him to the City of Brotherly Love, but there’s still hope. Derek Holland, who got off to a shaky start, is starting to prove himself as a versatile pitcher. For the Rangers, who finished as runners-up in the World Series last year, the sweet taste of almost-success is going to be a powerful motivator for 2011.
It’s been tough for the Tampa Bay Rays. With several players traded or lost, things are looking a little dismal. Opening day drew in the lowest crowds in MLB, but the players still showed up ready to greet fans at the turnstiles. Hopefully this year the Rays will give the fans something to cheer about. After all, who doesn’t love an underdog?
The Minnesota Twins are off to a rocky start as well, with several of their key players missing time due to injuries including, Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer and Delmon Young. But Morneau is still a great player and is back in the game, so here’s to hoping the Twins can face the hard-hitting competition ahead of them.
